New Port Richey formally known as Hickory Hammock was named for Capt. Aaron Richey who relocated to the area in 1880 from Missouri. It was in 1911 that New Port Richey started to blossom into the incredible city that it is today.  Through the efforts of the Port Richey Land Company, advertising this vicinity as the "ideal retirement area", New Port Richey began to flourish.  In 1922, a gentleman by the name of George R. Sims relocated to New Port Richey from Great Neck, NY.  Sims began developing land in the area as early as 1925, some of which he donated back to the city.  Enchantment Park, which is now known as Sims Park, was named in his honor and stands as a monument to him to this day. It was in 1924 that New Port Richey was incorporated and during this time the city began to attract the film stars from Hollywood, but the Great Depression dampened any plans that Paramount Pictures may have had for creating any movies in the city.

With New Port Richey being situated along the Pithlachascotee River, an Indian name that means "Boat Building River", and only about two miles from the breath taking Gulf of Mexico, the beauty the surrounds this community is awe inspiring.  Whether its water activities or land activities, the list of 'things to do' is endless.  Paddling down the Pithlachascotee, or as the locals call it, 'the Cotee', fills your senses with all the Florida's Nature Coast has to offer.  Keep in mind, if you’re paddling in late March don't miss out on the Chasco Fiesta.  The Chasco Fiesta was started in 1922 in honor of the legend of a Spanish boy and girl who were in love and the Calusa Indian tribe that captured them after defeating a Spanish expedition.  The legend goes on to state the two were later married.  Today, the Chasco Fiesta is celebrated with eleven days of both land and water parades, a Native American Festival, a Coronation Ball and many other activities for the whole family.  The festival takes place annually at the historic and infamous, Sims Park.

It was here, in Sims Park, in October of 2004 that President George W. Bush appeared in front of thousands to promote his re-election campaign? In June of 2008, New Port Richey celebrated its first Blueberry Festival!  With historical downtown lined with merchants offering fresh blueberries, blueberry plants, blueberry syrup, blueberry cider and blueberry crisp.  Various restaurants keeping with the blueberry theme, served one menu item specifically made with blueberries!

The variety of real estate opportunities that are offered to the prospective home buyer are never ending. With choices like waterfront homes with Grand Oaks lined along the Pithlachascotee River, upscale gated communities with all the modern perks and the many land purchasing opportunities providing possibilities of building or living in your very own dream home is only a step away!

With boating, fishing, paddling, snorkeling, tubing, diving or bird watching available at every turn, living in New Port Richey will bring you years of memories to look back on fondly.
