Before Isaac Washington Hudson founded the town of Hudson, Florida, the activity that surrounded this vicinity was vibrant. From the 1600's to the 1800's swashbuckling pirates found this area to be a perfect place to bury their takings. Afraid of getting caught, they would use the inlets, coves and bayous to cover up their illegal activities. During the Civil War the Confederacy used the Hudson coast for almost the same thing that pirates used it for, to sneak vital supplies past the Union patrols on the coastline to the fighting residents inland. In 1878, a teacher by the name of B.L. Blackburn established a Post Office in Hudson, this prompted for a name. Originally, this Post Office was called Hudson's Landing, named after Isaac Washington Hudson, but only a few days later the Post Office Department had removed the word 'Landing' and left the name of the Post Office as Hudson. The name of the town evolved into Hudson, Florida by 1881.

Hudson began as a small coastal community, however, with the growth of the larger cities that surround Hudson this area has been divided into large tracts of land which are now the home to many different neighborhoods. Hudson has become a community that draws in realtors, vacation home buyers, families, retirees and water lovers. Along the waterfront, take notice of the different types of homes from the different eras of Hudson. It was in the early 1980's that FEMA placed the ban on building waterfront homes on the ground, more modern waterfront homes are built on stilts. Of all the subdivisions on the east side of US 19, Beacon Woods is the largest. It engulfs the main part of central and south-central Hudson. Beacon Woods was incorporated in 1972, and more homes, a pool and a local shopping market were made part of this area. Beacon Woods has not only become a Florida Bird Sanctuary but a cave-divers haven!
