It was in November of 1886 when Simon J. Temple named this community Abbott, after Dr. J.M Abbott who had practiced medicine within the community.  It became an official town in April of 1888 and the name was amended to Abbott Station eight years later.  In 1909, a Civil War veteran and journalist by the name of Howard B. Jefferies relocated to Abbott Station with dreams of turning the community into a veteran's colony.  It was around this time when Mr. Jefferies was presenting Abbott Station to some prospective new residents when he heard someone make a comment about the rolling hills and zephyr-like breezes.  In 1910, Mr. Jefferies officially changed the name of Abbott Station to Zephyrhills, Florida, four years later the city was incorporated.  During these times, the city was well known for its citrus and famous pure water.

Today Zephyrhills, Florida is known as the "Friendly City" and the "City of Pure Water."  Although Zephyrhills is the second largest city in Pasco County, this semi-rural community still offers those "rolling hills and zephyr-like breezes" off the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Zephyrhills is rich in cattle ranches, citrus groves, productive poultry farms and Zephyrhills Bottled Water!  The famous Zephyrhills bottled water comes from pure spring water drawn from seven wells, it's then bottled and sold around the world.  Zephyrhills is also one of the few communities in the State of Florida that offers year round skydiving opportunities!  If you are a first time diver or a pro, Skydive City has it all!  Skydive city even offers tandem jumping options, for the first time diver.  After a 20 minute training lesson, you and your instructor will travel 13,500 feet in the air in one of Skydive City's aircrafts and, well.... jump!  Spiraling towards the ground at a whopping 120 miles an hour!  Zephyrhills also provides those close community festivals that bring you back in time.  Twice a year, in the winter and fall, Zephyrhills holds its AutoFest.  This auto event features a swap meet, great collector car auction, dirt track racing with old stockcars, sprint-cars and midgets!   In March, come and join us at the Zephyrhills Celtic Festival and Highland Games.  With piping, drumming and highland dancing, the community of Zephyrhills doesn't miss a beat!  In between all the musical entertainment are the impressive Highland Games and vendors.  With Zephyrhills being only 35 miles north from Tampa, spending the day shooting down some of the largest and fastest water slides in the state at Adventure Island or taking the 90 degree plunge on Busch Gardens infamous Sheikra is only a quick road trip away!

With the white sands and warm waters of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico less than an hour away, water entertainment is certain to be in abundance.  Boating, fishing, paddling, diving, snorkeling or just watching the breath taking sunsets is only a few of the incredible choices of things to do in the Gulf.

Whether you come to Zephyrhills, Florida to spend the day or spend a lifetime, the time you spend will not be wasted.  Zephyrhills offers a multitude activities and memories that will put a smile on your face for years to come.
